• About Project - SYAHI

Project SYAHI (Slum Youth Awareness for Habitat and Wildlife Initiative) is a noble and innovative endeavor under the Earthlings : the wildlife society of Hindu College that seeks to bridge the gap between urban slum dwellers and the world of wildlife conservation. In many densely populated urban areas, slum communities are often marginalized and disconnected from the importance of protecting natural habitats and wildlife. Project SYAHI aims to change this by raising awareness and fostering engagement among the people living in these disadvantaged areas. The key activities of Project SYAHI includes awareness building, community engagement, economic opportunities, networking, research and data collection where we conduct and organise awareness campaigns, workshops, clean-up drives, tree planting, wildlife monitoring activities, and educational programs to enlighten individuals on these crucial matters.

About Quick Response Team

Quick Response Team with a Quick Reaction Time (QRT) is a program that aims to protect and preserve the diverse range of species that coexist with us. With their expertise and quick action, they ensure the safety and well-being of these species in various situations, such as natural disasters, habitat destruction, or illegal activities. Their dedication to conservation reminds us of our responsibility to be mindful of our impact on the environment and work towards a harmonious coexistence with all living beings. This aims to provide fast action and help to animals in dangerous situations near the campus area, surrounding residential colonies of MulkaGanj, Kamla Nagar, etc. The idea is simple: the right treatment at the right time. The program will assist in providing knowledge and services about veterinarian alternatives, the proper method to deal with animals, and even the smallest detail about their food through the use of specialist strategies and information.

Chalk Graffiti on Climate Change

"We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it." Earthlings - The wildlife society of Hindu College in collaboration with 'Fridays for Future' participated in the fun filled activity of making chalk graffiti at Connaught place to spread awareness about climate change and global warming among the citizens of Delhi.

The event took place on 18th September 2022 and witnessed overwhelming response not only by various organisations that work for the environment but also by the commoners who stopped by to appreciate the drawings and quotes on the streets of Palika Bazar. ‘Fridays for Future’ is a dynamic global students’ led movement pushing for immediate   action on climate change through active campaigning and advocacy. It won the Champions of the Earth Award for inspiration and action because of its role in highlighting the devastating effects of climate change. It has millions of passionate activists who insist that their voices be heard on what many see as the defining issue of their generation. The movement was inspired by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, who sat in protest in front of the Swedish parliament for three weeks to draw attention to the climate emergency.

Founder’s Day

Earthlings, the wildlife society of Hindu College in collaboration with Panchtatva, the environment society, set up its own stall on founder's day under the ‘Environment’ category. The founder’s day is celebrated on 15th February and the stalls were put up on the same day. Its preparations were done in advance with teamwork of members of both the societies. The stall displayed information regarding the endangered and extinct species of flora and fauna of the countries that come under G20. A special feature of the stall was that we used no plastic in its decoration. We also used creative ways for decoration by using biodegradable materials of ropes, mud etc. in its decoration. The 17 sustainable goals by UNDP were also mentioned in the stall. We also sold handmade soaps made with natural ingredients. There were soaps made of lemon zest, multani mitti and neem. The sales made from these soaps were sent to charity. The stall was considered to be among the best of stalls. The Chief Guest of the event, Mr. Amitabh Kant also left a positive review. This was a proud moment for us. The stall was visited by many people who became aware about wildlife and environment. We also asked for their feedback. Both, the society and the visitors learnt about each other’s perspective. The visitors learnt about the society’s motive and awareness it seeks to spread. The society learnt what people thought about them and how they can improve.

Dog Neutralize Drive

On the campus, a sterilization drive was carried out to ensure the safety and well-being of all dogs. During the drive, most of the dogs on campus had already been neutered, which is a healthy and responsible way of managing their population. The neutering process has many benefits for dogs, including reducing the risk of certain cancers and behavioral issues. However, two dogs were left unneutered, which were identified through ear cuts and were taken for neuter and spay. The volunteers also identified a cute female dog who needed to be spayed. Spaying female dogs is essential, as it helps prevent unwanted litters and reduces the risk of certain health problems. Some dogs from St. Stephens campus were also taken To carry out the drive, several members of the Earthlings, volunteers, a teacher from the History department and a college guard, worked together to make sure that the dogs were treated with respect and care. The volunteers ensured that the dogs were not harmed or scared during the process, and their safety was of utmost importance.

Overall, the neutralizing drive on campus was a success. The efforts of the volunteers and the neutralizing team have made the campus a safer and healthier place for all the dogs as well as humans. Such initiatives are vital for animal welfare, help in promoting responsibility and emphasize the importance of treating all dogs with kindness and love.

National Zoo Trip

It is said, "There is an unspoken bond you create with the friends you travel with". Keeping this in mind, Earthlings - The Wildlife Society of Hindu College, decided to provide its members a break from their monotonous college schedules by taking them to the National Zoological Park, New Delhi on 10th of September, 2022. No doubt about the fact that the trip turned out to be no less than a respite from the same society meetings, and every member got an opportunity to bond with their fellow wildlife enthusiasts. Be it the metro ride from the Vishwavidyalaya station, or the walk down the length of the zoo, or the drizzle that made us all laugh like children of 12, or all of us competing to guess the names of the various animal species first, or to seeing the elephants doing some gymnastics just before having their breakfasts, or all of us snatching each other's tiffin boxes- we did have a wonderful time together. Not to forget, we also saw our beloved President turn into a doting babysitter- the trip did help us bond and get to see the fun sides of each other we otherwise don't get to see.

On September 10th, 2022, Earthlings organized an educational National Zoo trip for its members.

Campus Bird Count 2023

They say, "birds are the indicators of the environment. If they are in trouble, we know we'll soon be in trouble." We, the members of Earthlings, try our best to avoid that trouble in every possible way. On 20th February 2023, Earthlings, the Wildlife Society of Hindu College, organised the Campus Bird Count (CBC), the annual bird watching event from 7:30 AM under @team_ebird. The Campus Bird Count, an initiative under WWF India is all about documenting the birdlife across India at different campuses and raising awareness about birds amongst the campus's residents at the same time. The Campus Bird Count also helped our members to calculate the relative commonness of different species, based on the frequency of observation. It was a brilliant opportunity to get a much more vivid look and to know about these flying creatures with Mr. Chandra Bhushan, a birder.

"On February 20th, 2023, Earthlings organized Campus Bird Count activity around the college campus. Earthlings' initiative not only deepened the understanding and appreciation of local avifauna but also highlighted the importance of preserving habitats and protecting these feathered residents within our campus ecosystem."

The Bird count in our Hindu college campus was a success. We found 23 species of birds in total, and a few of them like Shikra are quite rare. Bird species counted are as follows:-

WWF Exhibition WINGS OF WONDER

World Wildlife Fund invited Earthlings: The Wildlife Society of Hindu College, University of Delhi to join the WWF India's Exhibition "Wings of Wonder", the first ever on raptors of India on 31st January 2023. This exhibition was attended by 20 members of our society along with the core members. It made us aware that 107 raptors or birds of prey species are recorded in India. Many of these are threatened and are struggling to exist. They need protection, their habitat needs active management, and citizens of India should be aware of their distribution and habits. "Wings of Wonder" took us through the information and stunning photographs of these magnificent birds. Listen to their calls, learn about their diet and migration, and celebrate the conservation success of the Amur Falcon, Forest Owlet, and the Vulture species of India. Furthermore, an insightful discussion on the differences between various species of eagles, falcons, hawks, vultures and owls was also witnessed.

Asiza ’23 (Society’s Festival)

Earthlings - The Wildlife Society of Hindu College organized its first offline educational extravaganza after a gap of 3 years, ASIZA on the 10th of November, 2022 in collaboration with Adhrita, Manthan, and Film Appreciation Society. It was a one-of-a-kind celebration of the wildlife and the forest spirit, literally justifying the meaning of its name. The event was marked by an awe-inspiring, wildlife-themed classical performance by Adhrita, prepared exclusively for our event, followed by the very informative, innovative and creative speaker sessions.

We invited 3 speakers, all of them well-renowned in their respective fields of work. Mr. Abhiir Bhalla, identified by BBC World News as amongst the foremost youth environmentalists in 2020, a three times TEDx Speaker and an active youth environmentalist at the global level, was our first speaker who talked about the role of youth in climate action and the importance of the young generation in bringing about a positive change in the environment. The second on the list was Mr. Verhaen Khanna, the founder of New Delhi Nature Society and a Commercial Pilot, Filmmaker, Photographer, and Environmentalist who talked about the current situation of arboreal wildlife in the capital. He also provided the students with postcards in order to address the Delhi Government to take quick action and protect the rapidly diminishing wildlife and forests of the city. ASIZA's third and last speaker was Mr. Ramveer Tanwar. Known as the ‘Pond Man of India”, he started a campaign ‘Jal Chaupal’ in UP to urge people to conserve water and save ponds, lakes and wetlands. Mr Tanwar is the founder of Say Earth NGO. Mr. Tanwar talked about urban forestry and the importance of the restoration of ponds and water bodies in the rapidly industrializing and urbanizing cities.

Alongside the speaker sessions, the event saw a very fun and engaging inter-college quiz competition, Brain vs. Wild, which attracted students from all across Delhi University and beyond. With an intense burst of pounces and bounces, and a total of 35 questions distributed between 2 rounds, finally, 2 teams emerged victorious after a tough neck-to-neck clash between the teams.  We also collaborated with The Film Appreciation Society of Hindu College, and we are extremely grateful to them for helping us in the smooth hosting of the documentary screening on the Panna Wildlife Sanctuary to create an atmosphere of awareness regarding the conservation of wildlife. A few members of the society also sold very affordable and eco-friendly tote bags. All in all, it is a memory etched deep in the hearts of every member of Earthlings. "The best and most beautiful things in life cannot be seen or even touched, but are felt in the heart.” Everyone who witnessed Asiza ’22, an elaborate and extraordinary celebration of wildlife, can confirm the literal meaning of this quote.
