DEPARTMENT OF PHILOSOPHY

About The Department

The Department of Philosophy comprises a committed faculty with specialization in diverse areas such as Indian Philosophy, Greek Philosophy, Continental Thought, Logic, Ethics, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Religion. More than seventy five years old, the Department has grown from strength to strength. At the time of its inception it had only one teacher on the faculty, the renowned, now deceased, Mr Prem Chand. The current number of the faculty is seven. Initially, the Department used to offer courses for B.A. Programme,  interdisciplinary and discipline-centred courses for the Honors students from other Departments of the College, and tutorials for postgraduate students.  In July 2007, the Department launched an Honors programme for Undergraduate students. Hindu College is one of the earliest co-educational institutions in the University of Delhi to offer an Honors Course in Philosophy. Our students have brought us laurels and have consistently excelled in the University examinations.

In addition to the scheduled lectures and tutorials, the Department also holds periodic lectures by renowned scholars, and organises seminars, group discussions, debates and workshops with the aim of augmenting the intellectual development of the students. The Department has instituted a lecture series called ‘SAMVAD’, where renowned academicians from various institutions in India and abroad are invited to deliver lectures. Periodic lectures and conferences with the assistance of institutions such as the Indian Council of Philosophical Research and the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research are also oragnised by the Department. The Department’s annual festival Panathenaea and its in-house magazine Falsafa enable students to showcase their academic, creative and artistic talents.
