Shankar Kumar joined Hindu College as Assistant Professor in the Department of History in 2006. He has earlier worked with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the apex Industry chamber in India. Having been awarded the Junior Research Fellowship by the University Grants Commission, he chose to reconnect with the subject that has always fascinated him, History, and completed his M.Phil., and subsequentlyPh.D, from the Department of History, University of Delhi.As is evident from his research work on ancient Indian medicine,trans-disciplinary studies have always interested Shankar Kumar, who consciously moved away from science stream of his schooling atSainik School Tilaiya to pursue History Hons. fromRamjas College and post-graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). In the interim, he also decided against joining the National Defence Academy (NDA) for which he was selected in the Air Force wing. In the recent past, Dr. Kumar briefly proceeded for the Vice-Chancellor's Fellowship at the University of Delhi to work in inter-disciplinary mode aiming atleveraging technological platforms like Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in university-level pedagogy.
Among the list of publications by him, are included, co-authored book likeFranc Concise Social Sciences and co-edited book like Indian History and Culture. Shankar Kumar has delivered more than seventy EDUSAT lectures on History and Indian Culture that were nationally televised live by the CEC (An Inter University Centre of UGC on Electronic media). These EDUSAT lectures are also recorded and their transcripts published on YouTube. Dr. Kumar has also featured as Resource person and expert on several televised programmes like History in the Eyes of Historians on Lok Sabha TV and Epic keDus on Epic channel. A life-member of the Indian History Congress, he has earlier served as Member, Task Force on "Enabling the Young Redefining Education", constituted by the Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi.
Shankar Kumar was the Deputy Director, Non-Collegiate Women's Education Board (NCWEB, University of Delhi) in the year 2013.
