DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

About the Department

History is one of the oldest disciplines taught at Hindu College with a focus on guiding students to develop such skills as writing, analytical ability and critical thinking. The History Department is enriched by a distinguished and committed faculty that engages students through teaching and mentoring in the classroom as well as beyond the classroom. The faculty specializes in a range of fields in History which allows them to play an important role in executing their academic responsibilities and consolidating the Department’s academic traditions. The teachers have research specialisation in Ancient, Medieval and Modern Indian History, besides having the expertise to teach different areas of world history to undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University of Delhi. The research interests of the faculty comprise Ancient India from the earliest times up to 1200 CE, Ancient and Early Indian Medicine, Ancient India – culture - archaeology – epigraphy, Veterinary Sciences and Military History in Medieval India, Prisons – Penology and Colonial power in early 19th century India, Gandhi and Untouchability, the North East – colonial knowledge and frontier practices and 20th Century Indian Diaspora – emigration – ethnic studies.

Most teachers in the Department have their important research works published as books, chapters in books and also research papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals in India and abroad. Some teachers are also supervising Ph.D. students. There is a more nuanced interface between the teachers and students as the Department organizes multiple programmes to promote an 'out-of-the-class' learning process. Invited lectures by experts, seminars, panel discussions and workshops are organized to augment the intellectual growth of students. Students are encouraged to organize and participate in educational trips to museums/archives, heritage walks, excursion tours. Besides these activities they also participate in organising the annual departmental festival and bring out a periodic magazine. They are also motivated to take up research internships while the teachers help facilitate publication of student research. Such endeavors allow students to hone their talent, and to develop team spirit as well as leadership roles.

The Department has an active History society called “Sakshya” with student office bearers, though all students and the faculty are its members. Hindu College History graduates have distinguished themselves in varied fields/ careers. They excel in administrative services, the corporate sector, research, social analysis, law, Amp media; mass communication, the banking sector, Army, Air Force, besides films and theatre in the entertainment industry. The Department endeavors to offer the widest possible options in terms of courses/ papers prescribed by the University of Delhi at the undergraduate level.
